is to support residents in the District of Columbia’s communities through mentorship, scholarships, educational resources, and other charitable endeavors.
Prince Hall Freemasonry has been active in the District of Columbia since 1825. Originally founded in 1784, it is one of the oldest organizations established for African Americans in the United States. Today, Prince Hall Freemasonry opens its doors to all people of good character and moral values.
The Prince Hall Masonic Temple located at 1000 U Street, N.W., is a six-story rectangular building which was designed by Albert I. Cassell and was constructed between 1922-1929. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (U.S. Department of the Interior) and serves as the meeting hall for planning charitable activities. It also houses the Prince Hall Center for the Performing Arts where charitable activities and programs are conducted.
In 1989, the leadership of the Prince Hall Freemasons in the District of Columbia realized the importance of consolidating the charitable activities being conducted by its membership. It was agreed to establish a non-profit entity and transfer the deed of the Masonic Temple to this new entity for the purpose of better managing the acts of charity. The new non-profit organization was named the Prince Hall Freemason and Eastern Star Charitable Foundation (PHFMESCF).
After a review of the structure of the PHFMESCF, it was determined that a restructuring of the organization was needed. In 2022, the Prince Hall Free & Accepted Mason and the Order of the Eastern Star Charitable Educational Foundation (PHFAMOESCEF) became the successor to the PHFMESCF. The mission and vision of the Foundation remains the same, “the consolidation of charitable activities of the Prince Hall Freemasons & Eastern Stars in the District of Columbia.”
Our organization works tirelessly to build better communities within the District of Columbia and to provide much needed resources to its residents. We are able to continue our valued efforts through donations from our membership and from donors like you who understand the importance of philanthropy. We have continued to evolve through the implementation of new programs geared to benefit the District of Columbia residents. We always strive to achieve our vision.
